Global Steel Production Decreased by 1.9% in April 2026

In April 2026, global steel production amounted to 153.4 million tons, which is 1.9% less compared to the same period in 2025. Over the first four months of 2026, global steel production decreased by 2% compared to January-April of the previous year, reaching 613.3 million tons. This data was released by the World Steel Association (worldsteel) based on reports from 69 countries.

Steel Production Trends by Region

Different regions of the world demonstrated uneven trends in steel production. In particular, African countries produced 2.1 million tons of steel in April 2026, which is 11.5% more than in April of last year. Meanwhile, in Asia and Oceania, the total figure was 114.2 million tons, which is 1.3% less than a year ago.

In the European Union (27 countries), steel production decreased by 1.8% year-on-year, totaling 11 million tons. At the same time, other European countries increased steel production by 4.2% to 3.6 million tons.

The Middle East recorded a significant decline in production — down 27.6% compared to April 2025, to 3.7 million tons.

Indicators in America, CIS, and Ukraine

North America increased steel production to 9.4 million tons in April 2026, which is 6.9% more than last year. In South American countries, this figure also rose — by 3.1% to 3.4 million tons.

“Russia and other CIS countries + Ukraine produced 6 million tons, which is 13.4% lower than the figure for April of last year.”

China remains the leader among steel-producing countries. The top ten also includes India, the USA, Japan, South Korea, Russia, Turkey, Germany, Brazil, and Vietnam.
