Main Directions of Electricity Exports and Imports
The largest increase in exports was recorded in the Romanian direction, where supplies increased by more than five times, totaling 16.2 thousand megawatt-hours. Meanwhile, the majority of electricity was traditionally exported to Hungary, which accounted for 64% of the total volume of external supplies in May.
Since the beginning of 2026, Ukraine has already exported 157.5 thousand megawatt-hours of electricity. However, no export operations were conducted in January and February. Compared to May of last year, the export volumes remained almost unchanged.
“Despite the significant increase in exports, Ukraine remains a net importer of electricity. In May, the volume of imports exceeded export supplies by more than four times.”
Dynamics of Electricity Imports
In May 2026, electricity imports decreased by 29% compared to April, totaling 398 thousand megawatt-hours. A decline in volumes was recorded in all directions except Slovakia. The largest amount of electricity was imported from Hungary—this direction accounted for 52% of all supplies to Ukraine.
Compared to May 2025, electricity imports to Ukraine nearly doubled. Despite the significant increase in exports, Ukraine remains a net importer— in May, the volume of imports exceeded export supplies by more than four times.
