EU intensifies pressure on the sanctions regime
During a press conference, European Commissioner for Economic Affairs Valdis Dombrovskis emphasized the importance of strict compliance with the G7 price cap on Russian oil. He stated that any decision to lift restrictions or ease sanctions could have critical consequences for Europe’s security and fuel Russia’s military budget.
“It is very important to strictly adhere to the G7 price cap and possibly move towards a complete ban on maritime services to limit Russia’s military revenues, as the opposite decision would be suicidal.
The European Union stresses that lifting sanctions will not only strengthen the Russian Federation’s capabilities in waging war but also undermine support for Ukraine, as well as the goals set by the US and Israel regarding Iran.
Impact on regional stability and security
EU representatives believe that strict adherence to sanctions and price restrictions is crucial for deterring Russia’s aggressive actions against Ukraine and limiting revenue to the aggressor country’s budget. If restrictions are lifted or eased, the risk of escalating conflict in Eastern Europe and weakening European support for Ukraine will increase.
