Assessment of losses and compensation mechanisms
In an interview, Iryna Mudra emphasized that the total amount of losses for citizens and businesses due to the Russian invasion is estimated at over one trillion dollars. She stressed the need to hold the Russian Federation accountable for the crimes committed and reported that work is currently underway to confiscate 300 billion dollars of frozen Russian assets.
“Together with private businesses and citizens, we can talk about sums exceeding one trillion dollars,” said Mudra.
According to the Deputy Head of the President’s Office, transferring the majority of these funds to the compensation fund will become a quick and legal source of payments. She highlighted the importance of establishing a compensation commission, which has already been joined by at least 35 countries, and it is expected that their number will grow. This approach, according to Mudra, allows for making the search for compensation sources a collective responsibility for all participating countries, not just Ukraine.
Updated estimates from the World Bank
Iryna Mudra also reminded that according to the latest estimates from the World Bank, by 2024, the total losses inflicted on Ukraine due to military aggression exceed 650 billion dollars. Separately, the damages from the destruction of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station are estimated at 14 billion dollars.
