How the Criminal Organization Operated

The organized group consisted of approximately 20 individuals, each with clearly defined roles. Some members were responsible for recruiting executors through popular messaging apps, while others handled the creation and administration of phishing websites and technical support. Key roles were played by individuals who processed payment information and facilitated the withdrawal of funds.

The fraud scheme was based on the use of fake websites that imitated well-known payment platforms. The so-called “workers” sent fake links to sellers, where they entered their banking details. After that, money from the victims’ accounts was transferred to cards controlled by the perpetrators, and part of the funds was converted into cryptocurrencies for further legalization.

Judicial Prospects and Accountability

As a result of the international operation, the pre-trial investigation has been completed, and indictments against 14 members of the organization have already been submitted to the court. At the time of the uncovering, confirmed losses for 19 victims amounted to over 1.5 million hryvnias. The defendants are charged with creating a criminal organization and fraud. If found guilty, they face up to 12 years in prison with asset confiscation.

“The perpetrators stole data through phishing websites and converted money into cryptocurrencies”.

It is worth noting that recently, two other individuals involved in similar crimes are facing up to 40 years in prison for cryptocurrency fraud amounting to 650 million US dollars.
