Ukraine and Poland are launching a new large-scale project aimed at significantly increasing the import of natural gas. Regulators from both countries have already given the necessary approvals for the implementation of this initiative, paving the way for expanded gas supply capabilities between the states.

Joint Auction and New Import Volumes
The Gas Transmission System Operator of Ukraine (GTSOU) has received approval from the National Commission for State Regulation in the Spheres of Energy and Public Utilities (NERC) to expand the capacity of the international gas connection with Poland. A similar decision was made by the Polish energy regulator (URE).
It is planned that on July 6, 2026, a joint auction for increased capacities will take place on the GSA (Gas System Auctions Platform). Within this framework, two levels of import volumes will be allocated:
- 6.98 million cubic meters per day from the gas year 2030/2031 to 2044/2045;
- 10.20 million cubic meters per day from 2032/2033 to 2046/2047 gas year.
Further actions will depend on the results of this auction and the conduct of an economic test. If market demand is confirmed, GTSOU from Ukraine and the Polish operator GAZ-SYSTEM will begin the practical phase — the construction of the necessary infrastructure to increase capacity.
Benefits for the Ukrainian Energy System and Market
The increase in capacities in the Polish direction will provide broader access to the European gas market, which is particularly relevant for Ukraine in the context of martial law. This step will significantly reduce dependence on risky supply routes and enhance the resilience of the national energy system.
“Increasing capacities in this direction will expand access to the European gas market. It will also reduce dependence on risky supply routes and enhance the reliability of the energy system in wartime conditions.”
The implementation of this joint project is strategically important for strengthening energy security and integrating Ukraine into European energy markets.
