The First Watermelons of the New Harvest Have Appeared on the Ukrainian Market: Prices and Forecasts

На ринку України вже доступні кавуни нового врожаю

The sale of the new harvest watermelons has already begun in Ukrainian markets. The first batches of melons have arrived from farmers in the southern regions of the country and Transcarpathia, and this year’s season start practically coincided with last year’s timing.

Features of the Season Start and Prices

So far, watermelon trading is taking place in small volumes, and the main suppliers remain individual farms. Currently, prices for watermelons range from 20 to 28 hryvnias per kilogram, which is approximately 10% higher than the starting figures from last year. Experts explain this price increase by the limited supply at the beginning of the season.

“Agrarians explain the price increase by the limited quantity of product at the start of the season. A full market saturation is expected only from mid-July. Then, farmers predict a sharp decrease in prices. The reason will be the increase in the volume of watermelons from local fields, which are still in the ripening stage,” the statement says.

Forecasts for Future Price Dynamics

Experts note that the price of watermelons may decrease quite rapidly, especially after most farms begin to mass deliver their harvest to the market. A significant increase in supply and market saturation is expected, which, in turn, will contribute to a shift towards mass sales at more affordable prices.

Watermelon traditionally remains one of the most popular seasonal fruits and berries in Ukraine. Every year, consumers eagerly await the arrival of the first harvest; however, in 2025, the starting prices for this berry turned out to be somewhat higher. Nevertheless, a decrease in prices and an expansion of the assortment on market shelves is expected by mid-July.
