Tata Steel Nederland Suspends Plant Operations Due to Exceeding Chromium-6 Emissions

The subsidiary of the Indian metallurgical giant Tata Steel — Tata Steel Nederland — has announced a temporary halt to operations at its hot-rolled sheet production plant (DSP) in the city of IJmuiden. The decision was made due to exceeding permissible levels of the hazardous compound chromium-6 detected at the facility.

Exceeding Chromium-6 Standards and Company Response

During recent environmental measurements, it was recorded that the concentration of chromium-6 in emissions from one of the smokestacks significantly exceeded the legally established limits. In light of this, the company decided to immediately halt production to eliminate the threat to the environment and public health.

“Safety and environmental protection are its top priorities, which is why the company decided to stop the plant’s operations.”

Action Plan and Next Steps for Tata Steel Nederland

Tata Steel Nederland emphasized that the DSP plant will remain shut down until additional technical and organizational measures aimed at reducing pollution levels are implemented. Production can only resume after thorough testing confirms the plant’s full compliance with environmental standards.

  • The plant will not resume operations until all necessary changes to rectify violations are implemented;
  • After the measures are implemented, follow-up environmental inspections and testing will be conducted;
  • Only upon confirmation of compliance will the plant restart operations.

At this time, the company cannot specify a timeline for the resumption of operations, as it depends on the results of upcoming inspections and the fulfillment of environmental requirements.
