Switzerland Submits Updated Free Trade Agreement with Ukraine to Parliament

The Federal Council of Switzerland has submitted a draft resolution for the ratification of the updated Free Trade Agreement between the countries of the European Free Trade Association and Ukraine to Parliament. This step demonstrates Switzerland’s solidarity with Ukraine during a challenging period and simultaneously strengthens the positions of Swiss companies in the Ukrainian market.

Main Innovations of the Agreement

The updated document includes new sections dedicated to electronic commerce, sustainable development, support for small and medium-sized enterprises, and technical cooperation. One of the key points is the elimination of tariffs on nearly all (99.9%) Swiss-made goods, which is expected to significantly simplify and reduce the costs of trade operations between the countries.

“Switzerland continues to support Ukraine through development programs, humanitarian initiatives, and reconstruction projects, including through the country’s recovery agreement, which is currently in the consultation stage.”

Next Steps and Prospects for Entry into Force

It is expected that the Swiss Parliament will consider the draft agreement during the spring or summer session of 2026. If approved, the document could come into force as early as the beginning of 2027.

It is worth noting that in April, Ukraine signed the updated agreement with the countries of the European Free Trade Association — Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein. This will further facilitate trade procedures between the countries and strengthen economic ties.
