, greenhouse berries, particularly from the Vynohradiv district, currently dominate the markets in the region.
Farmer Vasyl from Vynohradiv shared that at the moment only greenhouse strawberries are ripening, which cost 120 hryvnias per kilogram.
“We expect prices to drop to 80-100 hryvnias per kilogram, but it won’t be cheaper – production costs have risen”
, he explains.
According to him, the most affordable berries for making jam or freezing can be purchased closer to the end of May at a price of 25-30 hryvnias per kilogram. Strawberries have already appeared in the market in Khust, but their price there is even higher – 150 hryvnias per kilogram. Seller Iryna noted that the cold and prolonged spring has affected the yield, so significant price reductions should not be expected at this time.
“People are still buying: some a few berries for their child, some half a kilogram, and some even a whole kilogram”
, she says.
Imported strawberries, mainly supplied from Greece and Spain, currently cost 170-200 hryvnias per kilogram, while in supermarkets they are priced up to 150 hryvnias for a 250-gram package.
Doctors warn about early strawberries. Doctor Anastasia Klovanych advises thoroughly washing strawberries, preferably soaking them in water with baking soda or citric acid, as early batches may contain residues of nitrates or pesticides. It is better to buy from trusted farmers.
It is expected that the peak of the strawberry season will occur at the end of May to early June, when the price and quality of the berries will be most optimal.
