Solar Eclipse of 2027: When and Where Night Will Fall During Daylight

On August 2, 2027, the longest total solar eclipse of the 21st century will occur on the planet. On this day, millions of people in various regions of the world will be able to witness the sky suddenly darkening in broad daylight, temperatures dropping, and streetlights turning on, creating an unusual atmosphere of nighttime darkness.

Uniqueness of the 2027 Solar Eclipse

During the maximum eclipse, the Moon will completely cover the Sun for a record 6 minutes and 23 seconds. Astronomers emphasize that the next opportunity to observe such a long eclipse on land will not occur until 2114.

The path of totality will pass through Southern Europe, Northern Africa, and the Middle East. Approximately 89 million people will be in the path of the eclipse—from the southern regions of Spain to the Horn of Africa. During this phenomenon, planets, the brightest stars, and the solar corona will become visible in the sky.

Duration and Geography of the Eclipse

The reason for such a significant duration is that the Moon will be at its closest point to Earth at this time, while the Sun will appear slightly smaller due to the planet’s distance from it. Additionally, the shadow of the Moon will move over tropical latitudes, where it travels more slowly.

The longest phase of the eclipse is expected near the Egyptian city of Luxor—here, the duration of total darkness will exceed six minutes and cover the Nile Valley.

In Italy, there will be no total phase; however, in Rome, the Sun will be obscured by approximately 75%, and on the island of Lampedusa, up to 99.5%, leading to deep twilight during the day.

“It is forbidden to look at the Sun without special protective glasses. It is safe to do so only during the total phase—and only where it truly occurs.”

In addition to its spectacle, the event will test ecosystems and energy grids, and for most people, it will be a unique experience when the familiar world changes literally for a few minutes.
