Sales of Gasoline and Diesel Cars in the EU Decline Amid Growing Popularity of Electric Vehicles

Throughout 2025, the market for new passenger cars in the European Union demonstrated moderate growth — sales volumes increased by 1.8% compared to the previous year. This data was released by the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) and is also confirmed by Ukravtoprom.

Electrified Vehicles Gaining Popularity

By the end of the year, over 10.8 million new cars were sold in EU countries. The most significant growth is observed in the electrified transport segment. A substantial market share is held by hybrid models (HEV), with 3,733,325 units registered, which is a 14% increase compared to 2024. Sales volumes of electric vehicles (BEV) reached 1,880,370 units, showing a growth of 30%. Sales of plug-in hybrids are growing even faster — 1,015,887 units (+33%).

“Hybrids hold the largest market share of new passenger cars in the EU at 34.5%. In second place are gasoline cars with a share of 26.6%, while electric vehicles complete the top three with a figure of 17.4%.”

Decline in Demand for Gasoline and Diesel Cars

At the same time, traditional cars with internal combustion engines are losing ground. Sales of gasoline cars decreased by 19% to 2,880,298 units. The figures for diesel vehicles fell even more — by 24%, to 960,024 units. Other categories of cars, which include alternative fuel types, also show growth — 352,927 units (+8%).

The change in the sales structure indicates a strengthening trend towards the “greening” of the vehicle fleet in European Union countries. Experts note that the demand for electrified models will continue to grow, while the share of traditional gasoline and diesel cars will steadily decline in the future.
