Losses of the Parties and Assessments by International Organizations

Official Moscow does not disclose current data regarding its losses. The last time it announced the number of dead was in September 2022, stating 5,937 individuals.

Meanwhile, journalists from the Russian publication “Mediazona,” the Russian service of the BBC, and a team of volunteers have established the names of 204,626 Russian soldiers who have died in the war since February 2022 based on open sources. As the journalists note, the list is not complete, as information about the deaths of all servicemen does not become publicly available.

According to estimates from international organizations and intelligence agencies, the total losses of the Russian Federation, including the wounded and dead, are significantly higher. In particular, in December 2025, a senior NATO official reported that their estimate of the number of losses in the Russian army could reach 1.15 million individuals.

Ukraine has long refrained from disclosing its own losses, stating its readiness to reveal this data only after the war is over. However, in February 2026, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that since February 2022, 55,000 Ukrainian servicemen have died in the war. Additionally, he noted that there remains a large number of missing persons.

The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrskyi, reported in January 2026 that in 2025, the Ukrainian command managed to reduce personnel losses by 13%. However, more detailed information about Ukrainian losses has not been disclosed.
