Nearly 500 MW of Energy Storage Systems Installed in Ukraine

As of early April this year, the Ukrainian energy system has nearly 500 megawatts of energy storage systems at its disposal. This is a significant achievement that strengthens energy security and enhances the flexibility of the country’s energy grid.

Plans for Further Capacity Expansion

The Chairman of the Board of NEC “Ukrenergo”, Vitaliy Zaychenko, reported that by the end of this year, the total capacity of energy storage systems is expected to increase to approximately 1000 MW. According to him, this will significantly improve the reliability and economic efficiency of the Ukrainian energy system.

“Currently, we have batteries with a total capacity of nearly 500 MW, and by the end of the year, I hope it will be around 1000 MW, which will gradually enhance the resilience of our energy system. And the economic efficiency as well,” said Zaychenko.

The expert also emphasized that on sunny days, when electricity production from solar plants increases, there is a need to limit their generation. Energy storage systems allow for the accumulation of excess electricity, which can be used during evening consumption peaks.

Prospects for the Development of Energy Storage Systems

Vitaliy Zaychenko noted that technical conditions have already been issued for the installation of over 1000 MW of energy storage systems. This indicates a high demand for such technologies and the further development of innovative energy infrastructure.

In 2025, the winners of special auctions held by NEC “Ukrenergo” for the provision of ancillary services will have commissioned 423 MW of new energy facilities, of which 398 MW are energy storage systems.
