In Ukraine, not all vehicles are required to undergo mandatory technical inspection (MTI). According to the explanation from the Main Service Center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the mandatory technical inspection applies to vehicles that are registered with the territorial bodies of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and participate in road traffic.

Which Vehicles Are Subject to Mandatory MTI
The list of vehicles subject to mandatory technical inspection includes:
- Passenger cars of all types, makes, and models, as well as trailers (semi-trailers) for them, except for taxis and vehicles used for transporting passengers or cargo for profit;
- Motorcycles, mopeds, motor tricycles, and other equivalent vehicles, regardless of their period of operation;
- Passenger cars used for commercial transportation of passengers or cargo, trucks (regardless of ownership) with a payload of up to 3.5 tons and their trailers, with a period of operation of up to two years;
- Technical means of the agro-industrial complex, according to the Law of Ukraine “On the System of Engineering and Technical Support of the Agro-Industrial Complex of Ukraine.”
Procedure for Conducting Technical Inspection and Its Frequency
The mandatory technical inspection involves a comprehensive check of the vehicle, including the following elements:
- Brake and steering systems;
- External lighting devices;
- Pneumatic tires and wheels;
- Light transmission of glass;
- Gas cylinder equipment (if available);
- Other components that directly affect road safety and ecology.

The frequency of mandatory technical inspection depends on the type of vehicle and its purpose:
- Passenger cars for commercial transportation of passengers or cargo, trucks up to 3.5 tons, and their trailers with a period of operation exceeding two years must undergo inspection every two years;
- Trucks with a payload exceeding 3.5 tons, their trailers, and taxis regardless of the period of operation — annually;
- Buses and specialized vehicles for transporting hazardous goods — twice a year regardless of the period of operation.
Thus, the mandatory technical inspection is aimed at enhancing road safety and preserving the ecological situation.
