US Implements Countervailing Duties on Rebar from Algeria, Egypt, and Vietnam

The United States has announced the establishment of preliminary countervailing duties on rebar imported from Algeria, Egypt, and Vietnam. These three countries are major suppliers of rebar to the American market, and the new tariffs will take effect in March 2025.

New Tariffs on Rebar from Three Countries

The US Department of Commerce has approved the following countervailing duty rates for all rebar manufacturers from the specified countries:

  • Vietnam – 1.08%
  • Egypt – 29.51%
  • Algeria – 72.94%

Investigations into countervailing and anti-dumping measures regarding rebar from Algeria, Egypt, Vietnam, and Bulgaria began in June of last year. They were initiated by the US Department of Commerce and the International Trade Administration (ITA), with the review period covering the year 2024.

Import Structure and Market Outlook

By the end of 2024, Egypt emerged as the primary supplier of rebar to the US market, while Bulgaria and Algeria ranked third and fourth, respectively, according to ITA’s import tracker.

“Rebar prices at the beginning of January 2026 in major regions remain stable with slight increases in China and Northern Europe. Offers in Turkey and the US are holding steady.”

In the short term, the rebar market in the US is expected to remain stable or show moderate growth. This will be supported by limited supply and gradual increases in scrap prices, while weak demand in residential construction will restrain sharp price fluctuations. At the same time, at the beginning of the year, rebar imports remained low, and delays in the introduction of new production capacities exacerbated the market shortage.
