With the rise in air temperature in February 2026, residents of Kyiv and other cities should be particularly cautious: as snow melts on roofs, the risk of icicles falling increases. Such situations pose a danger to pedestrians and vehicles, so it is important to follow the recommendations of rescuers and local authorities.

Safety Recommendations Near Buildings with Icicles
The State Emergency Service advises avoiding areas under eaves where icicles or snow accumulations have formed. If it is impossible to bypass a dangerous area, first assess the situation: pay attention to the level of ice on the roof and try to pass through this zone as quickly as possible without stopping.
- Keep at least 3–4 meters away from the walls of buildings, especially in areas marked with warning tape.
- If you hear suspicious noises from above, do not stop or look up; instead, press yourself against the wall, using the overhang as temporary shelter from potential falling snow or ice.
- Do not park vehicles close to buildings to avoid damage from falling icicles.
“Parents and educators must explain to children the dangers of playing during thaws under roof eaves and should not allow them to be in such places. When walking with small children in sleds or strollers, do not leave them unattended and avoid areas where ice, snow, or icicles may fall from roofs.”
Responsibility for Clearing Roofs of Snow and Ice
The Department of Territorial Control of Kyiv reminds that property holders – homeowners’ associations, management companies, and owners of commercial properties – are obliged to timely clear roofs of snow, ice, and icicles. This is stipulated in the Capital Improvement Rules. Adhering to these requirements is essential for the safety of residents and guests of the city, as well as for preventing injuries and property damage.
