According to eyewitness accounts on social media, the skier was navigating a difficult and icy section when he suddenly lost control, fell, lost his skis, and likely lost consciousness after a severe impact. Series of Accidents at Mammoth Mountain Resort
This incident marks the fourth fatal accident at Mammoth Mountain this season, which has been accompanied by abnormally heavy snowfall. Previously, a 71-year-old experienced skier was found in deep snow on Christmas, a 30-year-old patroller was caught in an avalanche while clearing slopes, and a novice snowboarder also lost their life.
In addition to fatalities, other incidents have occurred at the resort: recently, a 12-year-old girl fell from a lift but survived with only bruises. She fell past a safety net that workers and witnesses were trying to deploy. The resort administration has refrained from commenting on mortality statistics, only emphasizing that Mammoth Mountain is visited by hundreds of thousands of people each year.
