Cruise travel is traditionally seen as a symbol of luxurious and carefree vacations, however, former and current ship employees have shared impressive details from their own experiences that reveal a different, “dark” side of this industry.

Unexpected Situations on Cruise Ships
According to crew members, passenger behavior and events on board sometimes astonish even seasoned workers. On one forum on Reddit, they recalled situations that have forever remained in their memory. In particular, one of them remembered how, during a two-week voyage to Antarctica, a pipe burst in the ship’s storage compartment, and all the supplies of toilet paper ended up underwater. The stewards had to quickly distribute the remaining supplies among the cabins, but the passengers noticed nothing. Since then, paper is stored separately in each cabin.
“This happened on the second day of the 14-day trip to Antarctica. The stewards had to redistribute rolls among the cabins; we barely managed. None of the passengers noticed anything, of course. Now paper is stored separately in each cabin”
Another worker recounted an incident when shots were fired from the shore, resulting in a colleague sustaining a minor injury. While the crew awaited the police, passengers were informed that the delay was due to replenishing the water supplies. Later, the workers admitted they were amazed at how they managed to hide the truth from the passengers.
Other stories relate to incidents where tourists fell overboard. In one such incident, a person was searched for several hours until the coast guard found them. After the official announcement of the reason for the delay, panic broke out on the ship, and rumors began to spread among the guests.
Among the most serious mentions is the case of a passenger’s suicide right in the cabin while his family was on board. According to a worker, this time the crew managed to prevent any publicity, although the scene was extremely dramatic.
Curious and Amazing Moments of Sea Journeys
In addition to serious incidents, employees also recall humorous situations. For example, one worker was expelled from the ship due to a fight, a mess in the cabin, and even the theft of a spoon from the isolation room. Among common but rarely discussed incidents are small fires that the crew prefers not to publicize to avoid causing panic among passengers.
Some stories involve false alarms. One crew member recalled how a DJ inadvertently caused such a situation after a loud party. It also became an informal tradition for the captain to “spin the turntables” for the DJ while the senior officer stood at the helm.
Particularly spicy was the story about a “lifestyle” cruise that was actually organized for swingers. In such trips, children’s rooms are transformed into adult spaces, and access is only by invitation. A female worker added that despite the official ban on staff contact with passengers, the crew sometimes joins parties after their shifts. She summarized: “There are stories on board that most prefer not to mention,” paraphrasing the popular saying about Vegas.
Among other cases are stories about pest problems, such as numerous bedbug bites during the Horizon cruise in February 2025, the staff ignoring passenger complaints, and a video shot with a GoPro camera that showed the “horrific reality” underwater, beneath the ship.
The accounts of the workers confirm that behind the facade of luxury on cruise ships, shocking, absurd, and even dangerous events are often hidden, which passengers are preferred not to be told about.
